1970 DDR First automatic firing installations along the inner-German border. 850km of the 1 393km are mined during the year.
19.03.1970 DDR Willi Stoph, Chairman of the DDR Council of Ministers, meets Chancellor Schmidt in Erfurt for first talks on relations between the two German states.
21.05.1970 DDR Second talks between DDR PM Willi Stoph and Chancellor Brandt.
12.08.1970 DDR Brandt in East Berlin. In Moscow he signs a treaty on the "Normalisation of Relations" with the Soviet Union (Renunciation of Violence Treaty), recognising all borders in Europe as inviolable. A letter is handed over by the Federal Government stating that this does not contradict the goal of working towards peace in Europe and "the German people regaining its unity in peaceful self-determination."
18.11.1970 DDR Poland and FRG sign a treaty normalising relations.

PL Demonstrations and riots in Polish Baltic ports follow the announcement of renewed price rises. They are suppressed by riot police with army support, causing many deaths.
19.12.1970 PL Edward Gierek succeeds Gomu³ka who is removed from the Central Committee.
1971 DDR Brandt and Brezhnev in Crimea.
03.05.1971 DDR Walter Ulbricht is succeeded by Erich Honecker as leader of the DDR.
03.09.1971 DDR Four Powers Agreement on the status of Berlin. Signed in 1972 it governs: Access to Berlin, Entry to East Berlin (from West Berlin) and West Berlin's role and place in the FRG.
30.09.1971 DDR Post and Telecommunications Agreement between the two Germanies.
17.02.1971 DDR Transit agreement between the two Germanies is signed.
26.05.1972 DDR First treaty between the two Germanies, on transport, is signed.
22.12.1972 DDR Basis Treaty signed between the two German states.
03.07.1973   35 nations commence the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe, including the US, Canada, and all European states except Albania.
18.09.1973 DDR The Federal and Democratic Republics of Germany are accepted into the UN General Assembly.
30.10.1973 WTO NATO and WTO begin talks in Vienna on the limitation of arms and forces in Central Europe.
14.03.1974 DDR Signing of a protocol on the "Permanent Representations" in Bonn and East Berlin between the two Germanies. 
01.08.1975   The 35 participating nations sign the Helsinki Final Act of the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe.
12.1975 PL Intellectuals in Poland sign the "Declaration of the 59" on constitutional reform.
08.12.1975 PL First Secretary Gierek, at the PZPR 7th Congress states the need to end the existing freeze on food prices.
06.1976 PL A European youth rally organised in Warsaw by an unofficial committee issues a manifesto criticising the government for alleged violations of the CSCE Helsinki Final Act.
23.06.1976 PL Tribuna Ludu condemns the Polish policy of subsidies which encourage neither profitability nor productivity.
24.06.1976 PL In Poland, Prime Minister Piotr Jaroszewicz announces proposed substantial increases in the prices of many foodstuffs, between 30% and 50%. He cites increasing import prices for grain. He warns that the existing five year plan will involve many difficulties of supply and shortage of housing. 
Immediate strikes occur in industrial centres, particularly Radom near Warsaw.
25.06.1976 PL In Poland, a series of strikes is triggered in Radom by the announcement of imminent price rises. 
Radom workers initiate a protest march. Local Party representatives refuse to negotiate and party offices are torched. Élite troops are flown in and street battles ensue. Eye witnesses claim 17 deaths. The government cancels the proposed food price rises. 
29.06.1976 PL 11 of the signatories of the "Declaration of the 59" write to the Sejm to ask for "an expansion of democratic freedoms in order to prevent further popular explosions," and expressing their solidarity with protesters.
20.07.1976 PL Kuroñ appeals to the Italian Communist Party to help defend "Polish workers abused in the press, radio and television and held under arrest."
23.09.1976 PL The Committee for Workers' Defence (KOR) comes into existence in Poland.
01.01.1977 CS The Charter '77, calling for the implementation of rights enshrined in the Helsinki Agreement, is signed by 242 people (only one Slovak) in Prague.

PL Millions of Poles welcome the new Pope John Paul II (Karol Wojtyla of Krakow) on his first home visit as Pope.
